Decembers Birthstones

The December birthstones are three beautiful gems: Tanzanite, Turquoise, and Zircon. Each gem carries its own colour, history, and charm. Here’s a quick look at what makes each one special.

December’s Birthstone: Tanzanite

Tanzanite, admired for its vivid blue-violet hues, is one of the most captivating December birthstones. This enchanting gem belongs to the zoisite family, known for its colour that shifts beautifully between blue, violet, and hints of burgundy depending on the light.

Though famed for its rich saturation, Tanzanite can range from soft lavender to deep indigo. Found only at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, its single-sourced origin adds to its rarity and allure.

Discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Hills, first noticed by local Maasai herders and later brought to gemmologists by prospector Manuel de Souza. Tanzanite is a relatively new but quickly cherished gemstone. Many associate it with transformation and new beginnings.

Fun fact: Until the early 1980s, Tanzanite was often sold as sapphire because of its similar colour. Only advanced testing confirmed it as a completely new gemstone species.

With its mesmerising tones and rare origin, Tanzanite isn’t just a birthstone, it’s a gem that celebrates wonder, discovery, and the magical spirit of December.

December’s Birthstone: Turquoise

Turquoise, cherished for its soothing blue-green glow, is one of the most iconic December birthstones. Its name comes from the French turquois, meaning “Turkish stone,” referencing the ancient trade routes that first carried it into Europe.

While best known for its vibrant sky-blue shades, Turquoise can range from soft green to deep teal, often marked with natural veining called matrix. Formed in arid regions, it is found in places such as Iran, the American Southwest, Egypt, and China, each producing its own distinctive colour and character.

Historically, Turquoise has been treasured for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians, Persians, and Native American cultures all valued it as a symbol of protection, wisdom, and good fortune. It remains a favourite among artisans for its earthy beauty and timeless appeal.

Fun fact: Some of the oldest known turquoise jewellery was discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs, including pieces believed to have been worn by Queen Zer more than 5,000 years ago.

With its calming colour and rich heritage, Turquoise isn’t just a birthstone it’s a gem that embodies harmony, tradition, and the peaceful energy of December.

December’s Birthstone: Zircon

Zircon, admired for its brilliant sparkle and rainbow flashes, is another of the radiant December birthstones. Its name is thought to come from the Persian zargun, meaning “gold-coloured,” though Zircon naturally occurs in a wide range of hues.

While Blue Zircon is especially popular for December, this gemstone can also be found in champagne, red, and soft pastel shades. Known for its exceptional fire and clarity, Zircon is sourced from regions including Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Australia, and Tanzania, each producing crystals with remarkable brilliance.

Historically, Zircon has been celebrated for its association with wisdom, guidance, and clarity. In the Middle Ages, it was believed to promote restful sleep and protect travellers, making it both a symbolic and practical talisman.

Fun fact: Zircon is one of the oldest minerals on Earth. Some crystals discovered in Western Australia have been dated at over 4.4 billion years old, formed soon after the planet itself.

With its radiant glow and ancient origins, Zircon isn’t just a birthstone it’s a gem that celebrates light, clarity, and the timeless spirit of December

Together, these three gems highlight the colour, depth, and diversity of December. Whether you prefer rich blues, calming greens, or brilliant sparkle, the December birthstones offer something for every style.
